HillsidE ARBORETUM

Hillside Cemetery is proud to announce that it has achieved Level I Arboretum Accreditation from ArbNet, the global initiative that fosters the establishment and development of tree-focused gardens and arboreta. This recognition highlights Hillside Cemetery's dedication to cultivating a diverse and sustainable urban forest that enhances the natural beauty and ecological value of the community. The Hillside Cemetery Arboretum is home to over 27 species of trees, including rare and endangered varieties. The grounds also feature educational signage, guided tours, and community events focused on tree care, environmental conservation, and the importance of biodiversity.

ArbNet is the only international program dedicated to supporting the work of arboreta. Hillside Cemetery’s accreditation underscores its commitment to maintaining high standards of excellence in tree care, conservation, and education.

NEVER FORGET GARDEN

Designed by the Wilton Garden Club and funded by the Daughters of the American Revolution, this garden is a memorial to honor all veterans, first responders, and their families now and for all time. The 20-foot circular garden sits at the top of the cemetery, nestled between the junction of two roads, at a quiet and reflective spot. The garden includes seating for meditation, distinctive trees, unique plantings, and white rose bushes. White roses symbolize the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the date and hour of Armistice Day at the end of World War I, and the date and hour the Unknown Soldier was laid to rest. The garden at Hillside is part of the nationwide Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Never Forget Garden effort, encouraging the planting of gardens as a visual way to represent America’s unwavering commitment to recognize, remember, and honor its veterans, many of whom have continued to serve as first responders, and their families now and for many years to come.

Ginny Rico Memorial Garden

Located in the Spruce Section, this garden was planted in honor of Virginia “Ginny” Rico, Principal at Cider Mill School, who dedicated 35 years of service to the children and educators in the Wilton Public School System.

Specimens include flowering pear trees, a Snow Fountain cascading cherry tree, a beautiful Magnolia ‘Jane’ tree and dwarf boxwoods that create a ribbon of evergreen around the garden.
